S-TEN Project: Intelligent Self-describing Technical and Environmental Networks
S-TEN is a research project having started in April 2006 during till October 2008.
It is co-funded by the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).
8 Partners from 5 European countries are participating as contract partners.
Objectives
- to provide decision support in a continually changing technical or environmental network
of measurements, human observations and product design information
- to assist data acquisition and process control by self-describing devices,
e.g. measurement sensors or intelligent sub-systems
- to tap the new possibilities of the Semantic Web for applications in the technical domain
Innovations
- to design an ontology that enables a device to announce its existence, its position in a network
and the services it provides on the web
- to capture human qualitative observations and to publicate them on the web
- to link two generic worlds describing the life cycle of products,
i.E. STEP (ISO 10303) and OWL (Ontology Web Language)
Activities
- to evaluate relevant technology in the fields of the semantic web and artificial intelligence
- to design appropriate ontologies derived from existing standards
- to provide appropriate software interfacing the S-TEN ontologies and applying rules to the data
- to demonstrate the technology with practical examples
